About Petalchime
Two people, one measuring table, and a strong opinion about listing photos that hide the back of a bodice.
Petalchime began in 2022 as a stall at a Manchester alternative fashion market, run by two people who had both been burned by ordering dresses that arrived with measurements nothing like the listing. The stall sold twelve dresses that first weekend, and eleven of those buyers asked the same question: "will it actually close?"
That question became the shop. We buy small runs directly from four ateliers, unpack every parcel, and measure each garment flat on the same table with the same tape before it goes on the site.
Ateliers we stock
Aster & Pine
Classic and country cuts in cotton and cotton blends. Consistent sizing between runs, generous seam allowance, and the only atelier we stock that still finishes internal seams by hand.
Lumen Doll
Sweet substyle, lighter fabrics, strong print work. Runs slightly small at the waist; we note it on every listing rather than pretending otherwise.
Moss Chapel
Gothic and ouji pieces with heavier construction. Their coats are the best-made garments we carry and priced accordingly.
Ivory Clockwork
Blouses, shoes and structural basics. Narrow sleeve cut across the range, which suits some people and genuinely does not suit others.
Garment care notes
Almost everything we sell is happier hand-washed cool and dried flat in shade. Specific guidance:
- Cotton OPs and JSKs — hand wash cool, no wringing. Iron inside out on a low setting while slightly damp.
- Lace trims — never machine dry. Heat is what turns white lace that dull yellow-grey after a season.
- Wool coats — brush after each wear, dry clean at most once a season.
- Petticoats — rinse, then hang upside down from the waistband so the tulle keeps its shape.
- Shoes — stuff with paper while drying, never leave near a radiator.
What we do not do
We do not resell secondhand pieces as new, we do not stock replicas of other ateliers' prints, and we do not run countdown timers on stock levels. If something is nearly gone the listing says how many are left, and that number is real.
Visiting
The unit at Bellhaven Yard is a workroom rather than a shopfront, but fittings can be booked on Thursdays. Email ahead and tell us which pieces you want to try; we will have them steamed and ready.
